Erstad initierte den kuratoriske plattform Multiplex i Berlin, med fokus på film og videokunst. Hun har samarbeidet og bistått prosjekter som Time/bank (New York og Moskva) av E-flux og Agency of Unrealized Projects ved DAAD galerie (Berlin). Hun har tidligere vært kurator for Bergen Kunsthalls liveprogram og jobbet som kuratorassistent for 2016-utgaven av Bergen Assembly før hun begynte som konstituert direktør i 2018 og direktør i 2020.
Bergen Assembly er en fleksibel modell for kunstproduksjon som leder frem til offentlige arrangementer i Bergen hvert tredje år. Gjennom samarbeid med kunstnere, lokalmiljøer, sivilsamfunn, kultur- og utdanningsinstitusjoner gir Bergen Assembly en plattform til ulike samfunnsrelevante kunstprosjekter og fagdiskurser. Bergen Assembly bidrar til Bergens kunstscene ved å styrke relasjoner mellom kunstmiljøene og samfunnet for øvrig, gjennom lokalt forankrede prosjekter, og gjennom internasjonale samarbeidsprosjekter.
På konferansen vil Erstad presentere kunstverket La Cantina de la Touriste (Tourist Canteen, 2022) av Sol Calero. Verket er en permanent installasjon som nå utgjør det nye interiøret på Kafé Mat & Prat i Bergen. Prosjektet er bestilt av Bergen Assembly og åpnet under triennalen i 2022 med en total transformasjon av det tidligere institusjonspregede rommet. Caleros innbydende og fargerike design ble utviklet i tett dialog med Kafé Mat & Prat. Kafeen er drevet av Ny sjanse, og er et arbeidstreningstiltak for innvandrere i Bergen. Deltakerne i dette kvalifiseringsprogrammet får både norskundervisning og opplæring i ledelse, service og matlaging. Kantinen ligger på Engen behandlingssenter, og er besøkt av beboere og ansatte, samt bergensere som kommer for å spise mat fra menyen som reflekterer deltakernes hjemland.

Ingrid Haug Erstad will be presenting the artwork La Cantina de la Touriste (Tourist Canteen, 2022) by the artist Sol Calero – a permanent installation that reimagines the interior environment of Kafé Mat & Prat. Commissioned for Bergen Assembly in 2022, the installation has transformed the formerly institutional space through an extensive installation designed by Calero, and created in close conversation with Kafé Mat & Prat’s community. Run by Ny Sjanse (meaning “second chance”), Kafé Mat & Prat is a qualification centre for immigrants in Bergen that teaches language skills while also providing a framework for economic livelihood via training in management, service, and cooking. Located in Engen Behandlingssenter (Engen Care Home), the canteen is visited by residents, as well as the people of Bergen, who come to eat cuisine from the participants’ home countries.
Bergen Assembly is a platform for the arts devoted to supporting and exploring continuous artistic work, and develops an in-depth project taking place in the city of Bergen every three years. Through collaboration with artists, communities, civil society, and cultural and educational institutions, Bergen Assembly provides a platform for socially relevant programmes and discourses. Contributing to the Bergen art scene by strengthening ties with the arts community and society through engagement and collaborations, locally and internationally is at the heart of Bergen Assembly’s work.
Ingrid Haug Erstad is director of Bergen Assembly and has a studied curatorial practice and art history at the University of Bergen. As a freelance curator she has been working with artist run spaces, self-initiating project and later initiating Multiplex, a curatorial platform devoted to artist’s films and moving image in Berlin. She has been collaborating and assisting projects such as Time/bank (New York and Moscow) by E-flux and Agency of Unrealised Projects at DAAD galerie (Berlin). She has previously been curator of Bergen Kunsthall’s live program and worked as curatorial assistant for the 2016 edition of Bergen Assembly before joining as Interim Director in 2018 and Director in 2020.
